This notice covers dcs stainless steel care & corrosion prevention. Read the full advisory below for affected models, safety actions, and next steps.
DCS stainless steel care and corrosion prevention is especially important for outdoor appliances, where salt air, chlorine from pool water, high humidity, and UV exposure can accelerate surface oxidation on even the highest-grade 304 stainless steel used throughout the DCS product line.
DCS Series 9 Evolution and Series 7 grills, outdoor refrigerators, and range hoods are manufactured from heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel, which offers excellent corrosion resistance under typical conditions. However, “stainless” does not mean “stain-proof” — surface rust, pitting, and contamination-driven corrosion can develop on any grade of stainless steel when care is neglected, particularly in coastal or pool-adjacent installations.
Why This Matters
Surface corrosion that penetrates deeply enough can compromise the structural integrity of grill components, create rough edges that trap more contaminants, and result in expensive panel or body replacements. Beyond aesthetics, corroded gas valve bodies or burner tubes represent a functional safety risk. Preventive care is dramatically less costly than remediation.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Brown or orange “tea staining” on flat stainless surfaces — an early sign of surface contamination
- Pitting (small holes or depressions) in the stainless surface, indicating deeper oxidation
- White or gray deposits that do not wipe off with water (calcium or chloride deposits)
- Rust transfer onto other surfaces when the stainless appliance is touched or brushed
- Discoloration around welds or seams that spreads over time
Recommended Action Steps
- Wipe exterior stainless surfaces with a damp cloth after each use, always wiping in the direction of the grain (the faint linear texture visible in good light).
- Apply a stainless steel cleaner/protectant formulated for outdoor use (Bar Keepers Friend, DCS-approved stainless polish) monthly, or more frequently in coastal locations.
- Rinse appliances with fresh water after any exposure to salt spray, pool splash, or chlorine-containing cleaning products.
- Never use steel wool, abrasive scrubbing pads, or chlorine bleach on stainless steel surfaces — these destroy the passive oxide layer that provides corrosion resistance.
- Cover grills and outdoor refrigerators with fitted DCS covers when not in use for extended periods, particularly during off-season storage.
- For coastal installations (within one mile of salt water), increase cleaning frequency to weekly and apply protectant after every cleaning.
- Address surface rust immediately: treat with a non-abrasive oxalic acid cleaner, rinse thoroughly, dry, and apply a protective oil or stainless conditioner.
When to Call a Technician
If pitting has progressed to the point where structural panels are compromised, or if corrosion has affected gas valve bodies, burner tubes, or electrical components, contact DCS Customer Support to assess whether component replacement is necessary for continued safe operation.
