Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Do not use the grill until a gas leak has been fully identified and repaired. A confirmed leak — or any unexplained gas odor with burners off — is a serious safety hazard.
Can I reset the code?
No. No reset applies — the leak source must be physically located and repaired before the grill is used.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Gas odor is present indoors or in an enclosed space near the grill, Soap test shows a leak at a valve fitting rather than a hose connection.
Symptoms You May Notice
Gas odor detectable near grill with all knobs off
A sulfur or rotten-egg smell is noticeable when approaching the grill even though all burner knobs are in the OFF position.
Stronger than normal gas smell when burners are lit
During normal operation, an unusually strong gas odor is present beyond the brief whiff that is normal during ignition.
Hissing sound near grill connections or valve area
A faint or audible hiss can be heard near the regulator hose connection, valve area, or burner manifold.
Soap bubble test shows active leak
Applying soapy water to hose connections or valve fittings produces growing bubbles, confirming gas is escaping.
Possible Causes
Loose or damaged regulator hose connection
The connection between the LP regulator and the tank, or between the regulator and the grill manifold, may have loosened or the rubber hose may have cracked.
DIY PossibleDamaged or aged O-ring at tank connection
The rubber O-ring that seals the regulator fitting to the LP tank degrades over time and must be replaced periodically.
DIY PossibleInternal valve seal failure
A valve that is leaking internally past its seat requires professional replacement and should not be used until repaired.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Immediately turn off the gas supply
If you smell gas with burners off, close the LP tank valve immediately. Move away from the grill. Do not operate any electrical switches or create ignition sources near the area.
Propane is heavier than air and will settle low to the ground. Do not assume the gas has dispersed just because you no longer smell it at standing height.
-
2
Perform a soap bubble test on connections
After closing the tank valve and allowing a few minutes for any pooled gas to disperse, mix dish soap with water and apply to all hose connections and fittings with the tank valve open slightly. Watch for expanding bubbles.
Test every connection point: tank-to-regulator, regulator-to-manifold, and each valve fitting. Bubbles of any size indicate a leak.
-
3
Tighten connections or replace O-rings
Hand-tighten any connections showing bubbles and retest. If the regulator-to-tank connection leaks, replace the O-ring (available at hardware stores for under $5). If a valve fitting leaks, contact a qualified technician.
Never use thread sealant on LP fittings that are designed for O-ring or flare connections — it can mask a leak or damage the sealing surface.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- Soap bubble test confirms leak at an internal valve or manifold fitting
- Regulator hose shows visible cracking, brittleness, or damage
- Leak cannot be located but gas smell persists with tank open
